James Reeves:
Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. Began studying piano & composing by age 7. After my schooling, I was married & have 3 grown children. Taught ethics for some years before returning to music as a profession when I opened my own piano studio 6 yrs ago. Music is part of the mystery of life. I believe the secret to mastering a musical instrument is not found, finally, in solving problems of technique and skill. These are necessary as tools to make it possible to become aware of the depth and fullness of the mystery that is music’s great appeal,i.e, its power to both comfort and disturb, heat and devastate, and ultimately, to inspire us.
However, in the end, the secret to mastery is to respect the mystery, to accept that no matter how skilled we become, no matter how polished our technique, the music itself is never mastered, but remains a mystery with a power we never completely control.
I believe learning to make music on any instrument necessarily involves elements of composing. For in learning to make music the student essentially learns to make a piece of music his or her own, to make the composition happen again in the performance of it, if you will, and I would approach teaching you or your child to play the piano from this perspective. In short, I look at myself not as a piano teacher, but as a music teacher, and I welcome the challenge and opportunity to teach you or your child about the mystery and power of music through learning to play the piano.
