Long time professional vocalist, educator and ensemble leader in a wide variety of styles. Masters and Ph.D. in World Music, B.A. in Voice and Composition. Led 5 voice professional jazz ensemble in Los Angeles 10 years (See dated photo on this site, 8X10 glossy, from that time!) Extensive experience as professor/instructor (history, performance, survey & theory) in various states, schools and arts programs, including adjunct at the Univ. of Arizona and Tucson's former Prime School of Music. International touring/performing experience and published lyricist/arranger. Scholar for the Arizona Humanities Council Speaker's Bureau and published journalist on the arts and specifically jazz. I will be directing youth jazz chorus starting Fall 09 at the Tucson Jazz Institute.
The focus of the teaching style is on opening up the voice, relaxing the mechanism and training for greater breath support, accurate intonation and ease of singing. Sometimes called the bel canto method, the approach emphasizes flexibility, range and most importantly long term vocal health. The different stylistic characteristics of various musical styles are made easier to sing when the basic proper techniques of singing are habitual; greater self-expression is made possible by the freedom good technique provides. Since I have performed so many styles of music, I appreciate the value and specialness of them. Many styles are very demanding and offer opportunities to abuse the voice; proper technique not only protects the voice, it frees the inner "voice" of the singer to find his or her own style. NOTE: Students may opt for music theory, sightsinging, ear training and songwriting to be included in their vocal technique instruction.
